General inclusion/exclusion requirements built into the screening protocol will ensure that to qualify as an
excessive drinker participants have met CDC's criteria for heavy drinking or binge drinking

There are no benefits to respondents for partaking in the survey. For this part of the study, respondents will
receive proprietary internal currency through the professional survey panel provider. Consumer
participants will earn e-Rewards currency or points through ResearchNow/SSI and can redeem these for a
variety of rewards that are of interest to them. Although it does not equate to an exact dollar-for-dollar
value, the number of points being granted for the present collection is worth approximately $1.00.

This study is aimed at developing an evidence-based and audience-centered messages designed to reduce
excessive alcohol consumption on behalf of CDC with U.S. adults ages 21–64 who are excessive drinkers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Alcohol Program is acutely aware that the
general public does not believe excessive drinking is a serious public health issue. Because of this belief,
the CDC is pioneering interventions that challenge the current cultural narrative around excessive drinking
—particularly that its acceptability is dependent on personal, social, and situational factors.
