NATIONAL DEFENSE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING GRADUATE (NDSEG)

FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Program awards fellowships to U.S. citizens who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in one of fifteen supported disciplines at a U.S. institution of their choosing.  Disciplines include:  Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Biosciences (includes toxicology),Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences, Computer and Computational Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Geosciences (includes terrain, water, and air), Materials Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (includes undersea systems), Oceanography (includes ocean acoustics, remote sensing, and marine meteorology), Physics (including optics).

Since its inception in 1989, NDSEG has awarded nearly 3,500 fellowships from over 58,000 applications.

For the 2018 class, NDSEG intend to award approximately 200 Fellowships. The NDSEG Fellowship is sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the Army Research Office (ARO), and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) under the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (OSD) for Research and Engineering.

1. Program Benefits:

   1. Full Tuition and Mandatory Fees

   2. Monthly Stipend ($3200 first year, 3400, second year, 3600 third year, 3800 fourth year)

   3. Health Insurance Up to $1500

   4. Tenure (up to a maximum of 48 months)

   5. During part of the tenure, fellows may study or engage in research or fieldwork away from their academic institution if, in the judgement of the faculty and with the prior approval from the GPM, such arrangements further the fellow’s education and contribute directly to the attainment of an advanced degree, and the fellow is officially enrolled and earning academic credit.
      
      

2. Conditions:

   1. Fellows are required to enroll in full-time programs leading to a doctoral degree in fields specified above.

   2. Fellows may not receive simultaneous remuneration from another fellowship; e.g., if an applicant is offered both an NSF and an NDSEG Fellowship, the applicant must choose between the two offers.

3. Eligibility:

   1. Bachelor’s degree – through the second year of a traditional PhD program.

   2. If you have completed your master’s degree, you are eligible

   3. If you are a first year PhD program or second year PhD program you are still eligible.

   4. If you are in the third year of a Graduate - PhD program you are still eligible.

   5. U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Nationals (the term “U.S. Nationals” designates a citizen of the United States or a native of a possession of the United States such as American Samoa)

4. Transcripts:

   1. Copies of official transcripts. Applicants can upload a pdf copy of an official transcript if it has the seal.

5. GRE Scores: We need official scores from ETS. Please use GRE CODE - DI Code 2525.
   

6. Application Deadline: The complete application is due by December 31, at 8:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST). This includes all references, transcripts, proposal GRE scores, personal statement, etc. We will send out notices to remind everyone around Mid – December.

7. Saving your Application & Reference Link: To generate the link for references, and ensure completed field information is not loss, applicants must save their work and submit. In order to save the application all fields must be completed; however, applicants can place an N/A in the fields that are still in progress, and then hit next and submit. This will generate the link. Also, upon submitting the application, applicants can return to update their file as many time as necessary, saving each time, until the closing date.
   
   

8. Proposal and Personal Statement: Font size must be 11 points or larger. Pictures, graphs, diagrams charts are acceptable (smaller text to identify these objects are allowable). Applicants should drill down into the various agencies within the DOD Agencies and get a good look at the research that is being performed, this will help you come up with ideas.

9. Evaluation and Selection: NDSEG Fellowships will be awarded based on the following criteria:
   
   

Proposed research relevant to the DoD. The research proposal should capture the following:

1. The proposed potential for the research

   1. Advance knowledge and understanding within its own field across different fields (Intellectual Merit)

   2. Potential benefit to society (Broader Impact)

2. Does the proposed research explore creative, original or potentially transformative concepts?

3. Does the plan for carrying out the proposed research sound rationale; is it well organized, based on logic?

4. Does the plan incorporate a mechanism to assess success?

5. How well qualified is the individual to conduct the proposed research?

6. Resources necessary to accomplish the proposed research?
   
   
   

Academic Achievement. This is based on your academic transcript, Major GPA, and GREs.

Reference Evaluation Forms. These forms should capture professional assessment of the applicant, a testimony to your scholarly excellence.  References should be provided by an Advisor or Instructor.

Personal Statement.  Describe your academic or other interest, and personal achievements.
