Why
should
your
3–5
year old
do the
urine
test?

National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

• The urine collection is safe.
• Your child will empty his or her bladder in a
container.
• You and your child will be shown how he or she will
provide the urine sample during his or her exam in
the NHANES mobile examination center.
• We use your child’s urine test to check his or her
kidney function.
• You will receive a report in the mail with results
about your child’s kidney function.
• We will use the information from your child and
from thousands of other 3–5 year olds to create
guidelines for normal kidney function in this age
range.
• We may also test your child’s urine for possible
exposure to substances in the environment.
• One substance we test for is arsenic. If your child’s
level of arsenic is high, we will report that to you.
• Your child’s information will also help researchers
understand how substances in the air or water or in
products we use can affect children’s health.
