INTRODUCTION

S0. Hello, my name is [INTERVIEWER NAME] and I’m calling on behalf of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Someone in your household recently filled out a short survey we sent in the mail. Today I’m calling to ask some follow-up questions.

Participation in this survey is completely voluntary. However, your responses to this survey are important for evaluating the potential impacts from the Columbia River System EIS. The answers you provide for this survey will be combined with other people's responses to develop a water-based recreation model of the Columbia River Basin. A copy of the full Privacy Act Statement including applicable authorities and statutes was provided to you in the letter you recently received from the Corps of Engineers, another copy can be read to you at this time if you like. None of your personal information will be used beyond this survey.

S1. First of all, are you driving, operating machinery, or participating in another activity that requires your full attention?

1 YES -> [SCHEDULE CALLBACK TIME/DAY]

2 NO

S2. Great. Before we begin, could you please tell me how many adults age 18 or older currently live in your household?

______ ADULTS 18 OR OLDER

S3. And how many children under 18 currently live in your household?

______ CHILDREN UNDER 18

-> RANDOMLY SELECT ONE ADULT TO COMPLETE THE INTERVIEW USING THE METHODOLOGY DESCRIBED IN RIZZO, BRICK, AND PARK (2004).1 THIS INVOLVES THE FOLLOWING SELECTION PROCESS:

Number of Adults in Household

Selection Procedure

1

Select initial phone respondent

2

CATI selects the initial phone respondent with probability 0.5 and the other adult in the household with probability 0.5

>2

CATI selects the initial phone respondent with probability 1/N, where N is the number of adults in the household. If initial phone respondent not selected, then that person is asked to identify the adult in the household (other than the initial phone respondent) who celebrated the most recent birthday.

-> IF NEW ADULT, REPEAT S0 AND S1 BEFORE PROCEEDING
