MEMORANDUM FOR CPT STEPHEN W. KRAUSS, MSC, USA, DEPARTMENT OF
MILITARY AND EMERGENCY MEDICINE
SUBJECT: Uniformed Services University (USU) Human Research Protections Program (HRPP)
Exempt Determination for Human Subjects Research Protocol MEM-91-3891
Congratulations! The Initial Review (ref# 877567) for your human subjects research protocol MEM91-3891 entitled “Empirically grounded definitions for Preservation of the Force and Family
(POTFF) Spiritual Fitness Metrics," was reviewed and approved for execution on August 24, 2018
by Micah Stretch, Exemption Determination Official as an EXEMPT protocol under the provision of
32 CFR 219.101(b)(2). This approval will be reported to the USU IRB #1 scheduled to meet on
September 13, 2018.
The purpose of this project is to develop a tool to assess Spiritual Fitness (the ability to adhere to
beliefs, principles, or values needed to persevere and prevail in accomplishing missions) that has a
broad enough scope to address both religious and secular service member populations. The study
uses Internet-based Capabilities (IbCs - Qualtrics and mTurk) to both recruit participants and acquire
anonymous survey data. Qualtrics and mTurk have both been vetted by USU IT for compliance with
DoD privacy and security policies. Participation in the study is open to the general public and no
identifiable information will be collected.
Since the study involves Information Collections (e.g., surveys, focus groups, interviews), OMB
clearance and/or RCS licensing may be required.
Note that it is your responsibility to ensure all applicable protocol related approvals have been
obtained prior to initiating study activities.
You are required to submit amendments to this protocol, changes to the informed consent document
(if applicable), adverse event reports, and other information pertinent to human research for this
project. No changes to this protocol may be implemented prior to approval. If you have questions
regarding this action or questions of a more general nature concerning human participation in
research, please contact Yaw Adomako-Ankomah at 301-295- 0428 or [email protected].
