Field Crop Program Changes

Field Crop Program
March 2019
Every 5 years NASS conducts a program review following the completion of the Census of Agriculture. The primary
purpose is to ensure that the NASS annual estimating program targets commodities and states most relevant based on
the latest available information. Last fall we announced the program review and requested stakeholder input.
The primary source of information for the program review is the Census of Agriculture, since it is the most
comprehensive source of data; however we also take into consideration estimates from the current annual estimating
program and administrative data.
The program changes balance resources across all of the programs included in the annual estimating program, which
represents over 400 individual reports.

Chickpeas removed from the dry edible bean estimates/totals.
Removing the chickpeas from the dry bean estimates has been an industry request for many years. This move will make
NASS estimates more consistent with industry and other USDA agencies.

Seasonal estimates eliminated for potatoes.
NASS is eliminating the seasonal breakout of potato estimates. Only all potato estimates will be published.

Publish sweet potato estimates in Vegetables report.
NASS will publish sweet potato estimates in the annual Vegetables report instead of the Crop Production report.

Objective Yield
NASS is making some modifications to the Objective Yield program. This includes:
 Eliminating Potato Objective Yield
 Removing Louisiana and North Carolina from Cotton Objective Yield
 Eliminating the August survey period for Cotton (except Texas), Corn, and Soybeans
 Reducing sample sizes for all crops
