Exposure to Arsenic and Uranium from Private Well Water in U.S. States

Urine and Water Test Results

Dear <Investigation participant>,

We would like to thank you again for being in the investigation of arsenic and uranium in well water. As you may recall, we were trying to find out if there is arsenic or uranium in your well water and how arsenic and uranium in private well water is related to arsenic and uranium in your body.

Your urine test results are provided in the table below. The CDC laboratory measured the number of micrograms of arsenic and uranium in each liter of urine (µg/L). For comparison, we provide the approximate percentiles from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for your age group. NHANES is a large and ongoing investigation to look at the health of people in the United States. Volunteers receive health exams and provide blood and urine samples that are analyzed for a wide variety of chemicals.

You can use the table to see how your results compare with other adults in the United States in your age group, based on information collected as part of NHANES. For example, if your results are at the 40th percentile, then approximately 40% of the U.S. population has levels less than yours and approximately 60% of the U.S. population has levels greater than yours.

Your urine test results from the CDC laboratories in Atlanta are as follows:

Your well water and tap water test results from the U.S. Geological Service Environmental Testing Laboratory are provided below. We have also included the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for uranium and arsenic that is set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The MCL is the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water.
