MARINE MAMMAL
TAGGING CERTIFICATES
These certificates are only to be used to register walrus, sea otter, and polar bear
skulls, bones, teeth and ivory collected by Non-Alaskan Natives and Alaskan Natives
who are not eligible to take marine mammals for subsistence or handicraft purposes.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR NON_NATIVE FORM
Tusks from each walrus should be tagged in pairs

Record the date tusks are tagged.
Village or town where tusks are tagged.
Record tag number of plastic-headed wire tag used for left tusk. (Use non-Native blue tag)
Record tag number of plastic-headed wire tag used for right tusk. (Use non-Native blue tag)
Record the date found.
Age of walrus. A = Adult, male with tusks 12 inches or longer; female with tusks 8 inches or longer. SA
= Sub-Adult, male with tusks showing that are less than 12 inches; female with tusks showing that are less
than 8 inches.
Sex of walrus: M = male; F = female; U = unknown.
Measure and record tusk circumference at gum line (see example above).
Measure and record tusk length from gum line to tip along front side following the curve of the tusk (see
example above).
Record exact location of kill or find.  For example – 3 miles east of Barrow or 6 miles S.W. of South Cape,
St. Lawrence Island.  Be specific.
Record tag number for polar bear skull. (use black non-Native polar bear tag)
Record tag number for sea otter skull. (use black non-Native sea otter tag)
Record location and date collected of any polar bear, sea otter or (non-tusk) walrus hard part. (only use tags
on walrus ivory or sea otter and polar bear skulls, describe other hard parts from these animals here)
Record any information of interest about the beach found hard part collected.
Print the name of the person that collected the hard part.
Print the collector’s address.
Print the collector’s phone number.
Print the collector’s date of birth.
The collector signs here.
Print the taggers name.
The tagger signs here.

After completing certificate, give pink copy to hunter, return white copy to our office (address Below), and
retain the yellow copy in book for your records.

PRIVACY ACT STATEMENT
Authority: 16 U.S.C. 1361-1407, as amended; 50 CFR § 18.23(f).
Purpose: FWS will use this information to monitor marine mammal harvests.
Routine Uses: This information may be shared in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 and the routine uses identified in
System of Records Notice INTERIOR/FWS-30, Marine Mammals Management, Marking, Tagging and Reporting Program.
Disclosure: Furnishing this information is voluntary; failure to provide all the requested information may limit FWS’ ability to
monitor marine mammal harvests.
PAPERWORK REDUCTION ACT STATEMENT
In accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act (44 U.S.C. 3501), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service collects information
necessary to monitor the subsistence harvest of marine mammals and will be used to obtain essential biological data necessary
to manage the species, and to respond to requests made under the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act of 1974.
The collection of this information will also help control the illegal take, trade, and transport of specified raw marine mammal
parts. Information requested in this form is voluntary. According to the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, an agency may not
conduct or sponsor and a person is not required to respond to a collection of information unless it displays a currently valid OMB
control number. OMB has approved this collection of information and assigned Control No. 1018-0066.
ESTIMATED BURDEN STATEMENT
The relevant burden to report information required on this form and have the specified parts marked or tagged is 15 minutes,
including time for reviewing instructions, gathering and maintaining data and completing and reviewing the form. Direct
comments regarding the burden estimate or any other aspect of the form to the Service Information Clearance Officer, U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, 5275 Leesburg Pike, MS: PRB/PERMA (JAO), Falls Church, VA
