2018 NEW MEXICO CHILE PRODUCTION
Planted chile acreage in 2018 increased 4 percent from last year to 8,400 acres, with
7,900 acres, or 94 percent, of the crop harvested. Production in 2018 was 71,100 tons
compared to 62,700 tons the previous year. Eighty-one percent of the crop was sold for
processing, with 19 percent of the crop sold as fresh market.
Long Hot Green harvested acres decreased from 2,100 acres in 2017 to 1,700 acres in
2018 and Long Mild Green harvested acres increased from 1,900 acres in 2017 to 3,400
acres in 2018.
At the state level, yields were lower for Long Hot Green varieties, decreasing from 14.0
tons per acre last year to 11.2 tons per acre in 2018. Long Mild Green yields at 13.7 tons
per acre, were unchanged from 2017.
The value of New Mexico chile production in 2018 was estimated at $53.8 million,
compared to $44.6 million in 2017. Chile for processing were valued at $43.8 million,
while the fresh chile value of production was $10.0 million.
