FY 2020 Survey of State Government Research and Development

The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Census Bureau are conducting the FY 2020 Survey of State Government Research and Development to determine the extent of R&D expenditures by departments and agencies during FY 2020.

Your State Coordinator has identified your agency [Name of agency] as potentially having conducted and/or funded R&D activities in FY 2020. Please note, if your agency does not perform or fund any R&D and you received a survey request, we still need to know that you do not have any R&D; please call or email us to let us know.

If you are unable to download attachments, please visit our website at https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/sgrd/information.html where you can download the form. If you prefer a Microsoft Excel version of the form or to give your information over the phone to a Census analyst, please call 1-888-340-7525 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Eastern time, Monday through Friday.

Your response will be compiled by the Census Bureau and forwarded to the NSF, the federal agency charged with collecting and reporting national R&D statistics. These statistics are used to measure states’ contributions to our nation’s science and technology base, a building block of a strong U.S. economy, in the calculation of state and national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and used by state and federal policy makers. Title 13 United States Code, Section 8(b), Title 42 United States Code, Sections 1861-76 (National Science Foundation Act of 1950 as amended), and Section 505 within the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010 authorize the Census Bureau to conduct this collection on behalf of the National Science Foundation and to request your voluntary assistance. These data are subject to provisions of Title 13, United States Code, Section 9(a) exempting data that are customarily provided in public records from rules of confidentiality.
