Title of Respondent Video: Timeline

Description: Video uses original filmed footage, stock footage, file footage, or a combination. Footage includes scenes of parents (with children), teachers, school administrators (principals), and children interacting with ECLS team members during the assessment process.

Graphic elements will be incorporated for visual interest and as transitions between live-action scenes. Part of the graphic transitions will include dates (years) that represent the progression of time from 1998, when the ECLS study originated, to 2028, when the new study will conclude. As each “year” graphic comes up on screen, it will include a visual element, like a portion of a timeline, that moves from left to right to indicate the passage of time through the past, present, and future of the study.

More than 20 years ago, schools, families, and children first participated in a study that today is still improving education for millions of America’s children…including yours—

The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, or the ECLS.

TITLE CARD: Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS).

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, the ECLS provides important insights into children’s educational experiences through elementary school.

Footage of young students in a classroom.

This isn’t just another study or standardized test for students. The ECLS explores how different factors, at home and at school, relate to children’s overall development and learning. It captures information about children from all around the country, from different backgrounds, and with varied education experiences, as they move through the elementary years, all the way to fifth grade.

Series of live action scenes continue along with diverse images of students of varying ages and icons reflecting elementary education.

Graphic: Timeline animates to show years of ECLS-K:2023 administration.

Now we’re asking for your student, and you, to help shape the future of education by participating in the ECLS-K:2023.

Students will spend an hour completing engaging math and reading-related activities with a trained ECLS team member, to measure their skills and progress.

Footage of parent playing with child.

Series of live action scenes continues: Longer shots of ECLS team member working with child to give a sense of what the assessment is.

Parents, teachers, and principals of participating students have a crucial role, too—answering brief surveys to help us better understand children’s experiences at home and in school.

Footage of parent, teacher and/or principal on a computer taking a survey.

Graphic: Timeline focused on 2024 and 2026.

Parents—you’ll be asked about how your family engages in learning at home and about your child’s experiences at school.

Teachers and principals – you’ll be asked to provide information to create a fuller picture of children’s classroom experiences, school environments, and more.

Footage of family life with children, doing educational activities; classroom footage, different grades.

Together we’ll learn more about how children grow and thrive in and out of school.

Footage of children of different ages.

Graphic: Timeline focused on 2026 and 2028.

Join us by participating in this important study.
