Healthcare Associated Infections/Community Interface (HAIC)
are healthcare associated infections (HAIs) generating
complications within healthcare environment and linked with
high morbidity and mortality. Many HAIs are caused by the
most urgent and serious antibiotic-resistant (AR) bacteria and
may lead to sepsis or death. CDC uses data for action to
prevent infections, improve antibiotic use, and protect
patients.

11 Describe the purpose of the system.

HAIC Interactive (HAICViz) is a public-facing, web-based AVR
(Analysis, Visualization, and Reporting) application which
provides information on epidemiology and trends in rates of
healthcare-associated infections and resistant pathogens over
time, using data collected by the sites of the Emerging
Infections Program Healthcare-Associated Infections/
Community Interface Activity (EIP HAIC) and transmitted to the
CDC. HAICViz enables data from EIP HAIC to be readily
accessible to the public as a supplement to publicly-available
annual reports and other information provided on the HAIC
webpages.

HAICViz collects severe infectious disease incident case data
such as gender, pathogen, race and general geography (type
of facility) related data based on severe infections from surgical
and other complications found within the healthcare
environment.

Describe the type of information the system will
collect, maintain (store), or share. (Subsequent
12
questions will identify if this information is PII and ask
about the specific data elements.)
No User IDs or Passwords are required for access to HAICViz.
There is no PII collected or maintained by this tool, and data
can only be viewed, not modified or exported.

CDC receives infectious disease outbreak information for
analytical infectious disease classification, identifying
circumstances of outbreak as well as developing and
promoting evidence-based recommendations. HAICViz is an
Analysis, Visualization, and Reporting (AVR) application
designed to simplify this information into plain-language to
assist in tracking severe disease related to six surveillance areas
potentially found within the healthcare environment.

Provide an overview of the system and describe the
13 information it will collect, maintain (store), or share,
either permanently or temporarily.

This tool tracks severe disease related to healthcare associated
infections related to the following six surveillance areas within
HAIC -1- Healthcare Associated Infection Prevalence Survey (HAIPS);
2- Nursing Home Healthcare Associated Infections Prevalence
Study (NHPS);
3- Multi-site Gram-negative Surveillance Initiative ( MuGSI);
4- Clostridium difficile (CDI);
5- Candidemia (Candidemia); and
6- Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA) -all of which are collected across specific epidemiology EIP sites,
including Graph Type, Tier information (ID, Name, Description,
and Note), Pathogen information (value and notes).
HAICViz collects severe infectious disease incident case data
such as gender, pathogen, race and general geography (type
of facility) related data based on infections from surgical and
other complications found within the healthcare environment.
CDC data management and statistical staff compile the data
and produce yearly surveillance reports.
No User IDs or Passwords are required for access to HAICViz.
There is no PII collected or maintained by this tool, and data
can only be viewed, not modified or exported. It is the same
information that would be contained in public journals only in
a graphical visualization as well as tabular that the journals
generally use.
