Screeners: For a statewide survey, plan on one person-day per school. In urban areas, a screener may be able
to screen more than one school per day, but in rural areas, it is almost impossible to screen more than one
school per day. Depending on your area, and who will screen the children (dentist, hygienist, etc), plan on about
$240 per school (4 hours at $60/hour).
Travel: Travel costs will depend on the size of your state. If you hire regional screeners, travel costs will be
reduced.
Translations: Budget $500 per page of translation.
Office Supplies, Phone, Postage: A good estimate is about $20 per school.
Data Entry: An administrative staff person should be able to enter 60 BSS screening forms per hour (more if they
have data entry experience). Budget $25 per hour for data entry – total cost will be dependent upon the
number of forms. You may be able to use direct data entry or scan forms and have no data entry costs.
Data Analysis and Interpretation: If the basic BSS model is used, data analysis and interpretation should take
about 40 hours @ $150 per hour = $6,000.
Graphics and Printing: Dependent on availability of in-house staff.
