Please help us improve daily travel in your community.
All over the country, travel and traffic are always changing. The U.S. Department of Transportation
(DOT) and your local government are working together to increase safety, reduce congestion, and
improve the accessibility of transportation in your area.
To help us understand the transportation needs of your community and the nation, the DOT is asking
your household to participate in the National Household Travel Survey. Since 1969, this survey has
been conducted every 5 to 7 years. The results have been used to understand how people get from place
to place and to help make decisions about how and where to spend transportation dollars. (For
information about previous surveys, visit http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/policyinformation/nhts.cfm.)
Today, the DOT is continuing to work together with State and local governments to improve roads,
public transit, sidewalks, bicycle routes, and other transportation issues in communities across the
country. You participation in this survey can help improve daily transportation in your community.

To get started, please fill out the brief survey included in this package. Use the pre-paid return
envelope to mail it back. Enclosed you will find a small token of appreciation. In a few weeks, we will
ask your household about their travel on a single day.
Your participation is voluntary, and will help us better understand transportation needs as your
community continues to change. No matter how you travel from place-to-place – by car, bus, on foot, or
on a bike – we want to hear from you!
If you have any questions about the survey, please visit our website at
www.NationalHouseholdTravelSurvey.com, or call our study team at 1-855-350-NHTS (6487).
Thank you for helping to improve our nation’s travel!

Sincerely,

Adella Santos
NHTS Program Manager
U.S. DOT Federal Highway Administration
