The Bureau of Transporta on Sta s cs, a sta s cal agency within the U.S. Department of Transporta on, is conduc ng a na onal survey of tank car facili es to monitor industry-wide progress in upgrading tank cars that transport flammable liquids.
This survey is authorized by Sec on 7308(c) of the Fixing America’s Surface Transporta on Act (Pub. L. 114-94) signed into law on December 4, 2015. This legisla on
requires the Department of Transporta on to provide es mates of the number of
tank cars being built or retrofi ed each year to meet the new DOT-117 or 117R specifica ons.
The 2018 Annual Tank Car Facility Survey includes businesses that are cer fied or
registered to build or modify tank cars. More specifically, the survey is interested in
collec ng informa on from all shops and facili es in the United States that are building or modifying tank cars to the newer DOT-117 or 117R standards. Even if your facility has not previously done this kind of work, you may s ll be contacted to par cipate.
On average, the survey is es mated to take 30 minutes to complete. If you are not
sure whether your facility should be included in the survey, please contact the U.S.
Department of Transporta on, Bureau of Transporta on Sta s cs, at 1-800-8531351 or by email at [email protected].
Your company’s par cipa on in this census is voluntary, however your response is
needed to ensure an accurate and comprehensive picture of the tank cars being
used to transport flammable liquids. A summary report of aggregate findings will be
provided to Congress and published on the BTS web page at www.bts.gov.
The Bureau of Transporta on Sta s cs, its employees, and agents will use the informa on you provide for sta s cal purposes only and will hold your individual informa on in confidence to the full extent permi ed by law. In accordance with the
Confiden al Informa on Protec on and Sta s cal Efficiency Act of 2002 (Title 5 of
Public Law 107-347) and other applicable Federal laws, your responses will not be
disclosed in iden fiable form without your informed consent. Per the Federal Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2015, Federal informa on systems are protected from
malicious ac vi es through cybersecurity screening of transmi ed data.
