2022 Census of Agriculture, List of Content Changes



  • Land Use Practices, Precision Ag – Question added.

  • Irrigation

    • 5-year question removed.

    • Acres with irrigation systems or equipment question added.

    • Intention question added.

    • Irrigation questions slightly reworded and order changed.

  • Personal Characteristics

    • “Is the person completing the form?” removed.

    • Principal operator questions, removed.

      • Is this person a principal operator or senior partner?

      • Is this person the spouse of a principal operator or senior partner?

    • Involvement marketing decisions, added.

  • Field Crops

    • Hemp by utilization added.

    • Sugarcane for seed removed. Sugarcane for sugar removed. Sugarcane for sugar or seed added.

  • Field Crops; Nursery; Vegetables

    • Sweet corn for seed was removed from Field Crops.

    • Vegetable seeds grown in the open will not be valid in the Nursery Section.

    • Vegetable seeds grown in the open will be reported under a specific vegetable in the Vegetable Section.

  • Nursery

    • Hemp items added.

    • Sod harvested was changed to Sod harvested or intended for sale in future years.

  • Vegetables, added crops are gourds and parsnips. Squash categories were combined.

  • Fruit, Nuts, and Berries, added crops are longan, lychees, paw paws, rambutan, gooseberries, and mulberries. Raspberries were combined. Temple oranges were deleted as a separate item and will now be included with tangerines. Added Berries section to the Hawaii form.

  • Sheep and Goats, Hair sheep or wool-hair crosses item added.

  • Practices, Types of internet access were updated.

  • Food Marketing Practices, Marketing channels were split into four categories.

    • In 2017, there were two: Consumers and Retail Markets, Institutions, or Food Hubs for Local or Regionally Branded Products.

    • In 2022, there are four: Consumers, Retail Markets, Institutions, and Intermediate Markets.

  • Renewable Energy, two categories were removed.

    • Biodiesel production system and Ethanol production system.
