Sampling Instructions
NOTE: Try to collect samples on Monday or Tuesday and ship back to the University of
Minnesota using the overnight FedEx label for arrival no later than Wednesday.

Each sampling kit is intended for 4 farms and contains:




Gel packs for keeping samples cold (place in freezer immediately upon arrival)
8 whirlpak sample bags for litter (2 bags per farm)
4 pairs of rubber gloves (1 pair per farm)

1. Upon arrival of sampling kit, place cool packs in freezer until samples are ready to ship. Please fill out antibiotic
survey for each farm and return with samples. Please sample farms after 21 days of age.
2. Find whirlpak “LITTER” bags that match the code for the farm to be sampled.
3. While walking the farm, take small samples of litter and place into the provided whirlpak bag labeled “LITTER”.
Take litter from approximately 5 locations of the first half of the farm for the first litter whirlpak.
4. Collect litter from the second half of the farm (~5 locations) and add to the whirlpak “LITTER” bag. (2 bags per
farm)
5. Place samples back into provided cooler/kit and add frozen gel packs (1 on the bottom of the box, 1 on the top
of all the samples).
6. Tape up box and place the provided return FedEx shipping label on the box.
7. Ship back to the University of Minnesota.
IMPORTANT: Please make sure to fold the top of each litter whirlpak bag several times before closing to prevent spilling
during shipping.
