  1. Who is doing the study?

  1. NIOSH

  • is the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a federal public health agency, and is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).   

  • was established to help assure safe and healthful working conditions and conduct research on worker safety and health. 

  1. Why is NIOSH contacting me?

  • During this study, NIOSH will be offering medical survey for lung disease to former employees of Uniflite and Tollycraft companies.  

  • Because you worked for one of these companies, we are inviting you to take part in this research study. 

  1. Why should I participate?

  • You will receive the study procedures free of charge. The information from this project will help other workers exposed to styrene.  

  1. How can I get more information?

  1. What will I be asked to do?

  • Questionnaire: We will ask you about your health and your work history. 

  • Lung function testing: We will use several breathing tests to measure how your lungs work.   

  • Color vision testing: We will ask you to match cards based on color. 

  • Bloodwork: We will study if blood can be used to identify lung disease. 

  1. Why is NIOSH doing this study?

  • This study is to understand the long-term respiratory health effects among styrene-exposed workers.  

  1. Is my participation voluntary?

  • Participation is completely voluntary. You may answer some or all questions asked, and participate in some or all of the medical tests offered. You may drop out of the study at any time, for any reason without penalty or loss of benefits to you. 

  1. Will I be reimbursed or paid?

  • You will receive a $50 gift card for participating.
