tcasey:
Interests and expectations options are based on a factor analysis done of responses to experience and outcome lists. Although there is a richness in asking directly about a wide variety of experiences and desired outcomes, the interest and expectations question is available to simplify the interaction and question fatigue coming from long lists of experiences and outcomes. If used this way, it is important to also use the open-ended interest and expectation question to surface the nuance of outcomes embedded in a participant's choice of those interests and expectations.
