To recap, our project, the Chronic Pain Guideline Project, has changed from non-research, to research, specifically
human subjects research.

As we discussed, neither CDC nor the contractor (Abt Associates) will have access to PII. However, after speaking with
the Patient Confidentiality Unit, it seems ISI may be applicable (as discussed in the documents). A Certificate of
Confidentiality is also now in place for this project.
Our 60 day posting period is now complete. We would like to send everything in for the final 30 day posting next week
before people leave for the holiday week. Would it be possible to return to us by close of next Wednesday 12/15 at
the very latest?

3. A Clinician Survey




The goal of this study is to evaluate the effects of policies and evidencebased guidelines related to chronic pain management and opioid
prescribing, including access to medications for opioid use disorder
(MOUD), for patients and clinicians in primary care settings among a
diverse sample of health systems.
All personally identifiable information (PII) will be removed from the
files prior to uploading using MOVEit, an online platform for data
sharing which meets FedRAMP requirements.
Survey Analysis: Univariate statistics across systems will be performed
on survey data, including means, medians, and standard deviations.
Distributions of continuous variables will be plotted and frequency tables
created. We will code responses to open-ended survey questions
thematically; describe common themes, along with demonstrative
examples of responses of each theme; and stratify analyses by geographic
region, clinician type, and system.
Qualitative Synthesis and Analysis: Qualitative data from the process
evaluation will be reviewed and coded to identify themes and
contextualize the quantitative data. All qualitative data will be coded and
analyzed using Nvivo qualitative analytic software. Codebook
development will be iterative and include deductive codes.
Secondary EHR Data Analysis: The study will use quantitative methods
such as odds ratio to measure health system variation in QI measure
change and their significance over time.
Using REDCap- Survey data from clinicians at participating health
systems
Telephone Interviews of health system leaders involved with chronic pain
management and opioid prescribing guideline.(may need phone numbers
and or email addresses for contact. Case study Interviews are recorded.
Interview at least two staff members per health system, up to two
clinicians and two care team members for an upper limit of four staff
members per system. Interviews will be conducted by telephone or video
software (e.g., WebEx or Zoom) and are expected to take up to 30
minutes. All interviews will be recorded with respondents’ permission. If
permission to record the interview is not given, we will rely on notes
taken by a note taker.
Clinicians have to sign a consent form. Participation is voluntary. PII is
applicable only if they are collecting or storing patient’s name, email,
and or phone number.
