Frequently Asked Questions about the Patient Reported Indicator Survey
What is the Patient Reported Indicator Survey?
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services are conducting a one-time special survey called
the Patient Reported Indicator Survey (PaRIS) about your experiences with the healthcare
system. The PaRIS survey is part of an international collaboration planned by the Organization
for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and is being conducted throughout the
world, not just in the US! The PaRIS survey will provide information about the outcomes of care
that matter most to people and how users of health services experience care. Policy makers will
use the responses from the US and other countries to understand how health systems are
addressing the needs of patients.
Why should I participate in this survey?
Your answers will help CMS and international policy makers understand how health systems
around the world are performing and how they could be improved. You will be contributing to a
world-wide effort to improve health care.
How is this different from the MCBS interview?
Unlike the MCBS, the responses collected as part of the PaRIS interview will be combined with
responses from countries all over the world. Some of the PaRIS questions may sound similar to
questions you already answered during your regular MCBS interview. We need to ask them
again so that everyone around the world are asked the exact same questions.
Will my participation or lack of participation affect my Medicare benefits?
Your participation is voluntary and will not affect your Medicare benefits.
How do I know my information is confidential?
The information you provide will be kept private to the extent permitted by law, as prescribed
by the Privacy Act of 1974. The information you give will only be used for research and
statistical purposes.
Who should I contact with questions?

please call the IRB Administrator toll free at 1-866-309-0542.
