SECTION C: PARENT-CHILD PLAY TASK

I. GENERAL INTRODUCTION. READ BOLDED TEXT SLOWLY—AS WORDED.

CHECK ON LABEL TO SEE IF WE SHOULD BE DOING PARENT CHILD PLAY TASK.

IF NO (CHILD UNDER AGE 1): SKIP TO SECTION D: HOVRS

IF YES (CHILD IS 1 OR OLDER) READ:

Okay, let’s begin with the play activity.

I am going to record you and [CHILD] playing with some materials. Just so you know, all the materials have been cleaned before this visit.

Altogether, the activity will take about 10 minutes. I am going to ask that you share a book with [CHILD] for 2 minutes and then play with [CHILD] using some toys I will give you for the remaining 8 minutes.

Where would you like us to conduct this activity? We just need a relatively quiet spot with enough space for you and [CHILD] to play on the mat while I record both of you.

IF PARENT/GUARDIAN OR CHILD DECLINE TO BE RECORDED, SKIP TO SECTION D: HOVRS. DO NOT DO PLAY ACTIVITY. if it is a soft refusal, BE SURE TO ASK THEM AGAIN AT THE END OF THE VISIT IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO TRY THE PLAY TASK.

PARENT REFUSED PLAY TASK

IF AGREE TO BEING RECORDED CONTINUE.

Once we start, I’d like to complete the activity without interruption. If the phone rings, it would be great if voice mail could get it.

IF OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS ARE PRESENT, ADD:

Could you please let the other people in the (house/apartment) know that you’ll need some time now without interruptions? Also, if you wouldn’t mind, if they forget and come into this area while we are recording, I will ask them to come back when we are finished so that we are not interrupted.

IF THERE ARE OTHER CHILDREN, BE SURE TO WORK OUT A STRATEGY WITH THE PARENT FOR OCCUPYING THEM AND KEEPING THEM OUT OF [CHILD]’S VIEW. THIS MAY REQUIRE THAT YOU WATCH THE CHILDREN DURING THE PLAY TASK.

IF PARENT OR CHILD IS WEARING A HAT, ASK THEM IF THEY CAN TAKE IT OFF BEFORE THE VIDEOTAPING ACTIVITIES.

CONTINUE:

Now I just need a few minutes to set up for the recording.

II. SET-UP PREPARATION

TIMER

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

TRY TO GIVE THE PARENT AND CHILD PRIVACY BY DIRECTING YOUR ATTENTION ELSEWHERE DURING THE TASK. HOWEVER, YOU SHOULD PERIODICALLY CHECK FRAMING THROUGHOUT THE ACTIVITY.

DO NOT INTERACT WITH THE CHILD DURING THE RECORDING; ONLY INTERACT WITH THE PARENT WHEN NECESSARY AS INDICATED.

MINIMIZE THE PRESENCE OF OTHER SOUNDS; BE CAREFUL NOT TO SHUFFLE YOUR PAPERWORK NEAR THE CAMERA.

IF THE CAREGIVER AND/OR CHILD MOVES FROM THE MAT OR TURNS AROUND SO THAT THEIR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS ARE NO LONGER VISIBLE FOR 15 SECONDS OR MORE, SAY: Sorry to interrupt, but please stay on the mat and face the camera. DO NOT PICK UP THE CAMERA AND FOLLOW THEM AROUND THE ROOM.

IF ANOTHER PERSON ENTERS THE FRAME FOR 10 SECONDS OR MORE, QUIETLY DIRECT THEM OUT OF FRAME WITHOUT DISTURBING THE INTERACTION. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK, SAY TO THE PARENT: We just really want to see you and [CHILD].

  1. SELECT LOCATION FOR RECORDING—SELECT A GOOD FLOOR PLAY SPACE. THIS SHOULD BE OUT OF THE HOUSEHOLD TRAFFIC AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

  2. PLACE MAT ON THE FLOOR OF THE SELECTED LOCATION.

  3. SET-UP THE PHONE AND TRIPOD. MAKE SURE THE PHONE AND TRIPOD ARE AT THE PARENT’S EYE LEVEL. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

ADJUST THE LIGHTING AS NEEDED. TO AVOID BACK LIGHTING, DO NOT FILM DIRECTLY INTO REFLECTIVE SURFACES OR IN FRONT OF A WINDOW WITHOUT THE SHADES DRAWN.

  1. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE PHONE IS POSITIONED IN LANDSCAPE MODE FOR THE RECORDING.

NOTE: TO MINIMIZE THE PRESENCE OF OTHER SOUNDS, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT OTHERS IN THE HOUSEHOLD ARE NOT IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE PHONE/TRIPOD.

III. START RECORDING A VIDEO FROM THE PHONE

OPEN THE CAMERA APP AND PRESS RECORD TO START THE VIDEO.

IV. RECORD SIGNBOARD – USE COVER OF THIS FORM BACK

First, I need to record [CHILD]’s ID number on video.

WRITE THE CHILD’S MPRID ON THE BACK OF THIS FORM USING A SHARPIE. MAKE SURE IT IS BIG ENOUGH TO BE READ IN THE VIDEO LATER AND THEN REACH AROUND AND HOLD IT IN FRONT OF THE PHONE/TRIPOD. cHECK THAT IT IS READABLE. READ THE SIGNBOARD AND RECORD IT FOR 15 SECONDS, THEN CONTINUE RECORDING.

V. PARENT CHILD PLAY TASK GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

ASK THE PARENT AND CHILD TO SIT DOWN ON THE MAT.

I am video-recording so please face the phone and tripod and try to stay on the mat. Here is the book for you and [CHILD] to share. As I mentioned, this activity will last ten minutes in total. After two minutes, I will take back the book and hand you the bag of toys to play with for the remaining eight minutes. During this activity, you may play with [CHILD] if you like.

I will let you know when the activity is over. Do you have any questions?

CHECK THE TIMER. AT THE END OF 8 MINUTES, STOP RECORDING THE VIDEO.

SAY TO THE CHILD: Thank you so much for helping me with this! It is time to put the toys away so that [HV name] can talk with you. Can you help me put the trucks, blocks, and people back in the bag?

PLEASE HELP CAREGIVER AND CHILD PUT THINGS AWAY.
