What is Baby FACES?

For some families, we will ask to join your
home visitor on one of your regularly
scheduled home visits. This visit would be in
your home or remotely, depending on local
safety concerns and how you are receiving
EHS services at the time. During this visit, we
will ask you to do a short activity with your
child. We will give you $35 for this activity
and your child will get a book as well.

Baby FACES is short for the Early Head Start
Family and Child Experiences Survey. This is a
national study to learn more about Early Head
Start and the families it serves. The current part
of this study is taking place in spring 2022. We
hope your family will join the more than 2,000
families from Early Head Start programs around
the country to participate in Baby FACES!

What kind of information
is collected?
The Early Head Start Family and Child
Experiences Survey (Baby FACES) is the
largest national study of Early Head Start
ever undertaken. It is designed to gather
information about how the program works
and how it serves enrolled families. The
Office of Head Start and your Early Head
Start program are working hard to improve
services—Baby FACES is helping us learn
how we are doing. To understand Early Head
Start better, the Baby FACES research team
collects information in many different ways.

Your family has been selected and we want to
interview you. We will ask you questions about
yourself, your family, and your experience with
Early Head Start. We will also talk with your
child’s teacher or home visitor.

What will I be asked to do?
You will be interviewed by telephone and also
asked to fill out a short report about your child.
Families who do the interview and report will
receive $25 as a thank you.

All the answers you give are private. They
will never be shared with anyone from Early
Head Start. The decision to take part in the
study is yours. However, if you decide not
to be part of Baby FACES (even though we
hope you will), it will not affect your or your
child’s Early Head Start participation.

Who is conducting Baby FACES?
Baby FACES is sponsored by the
Administration for Children and Families,
the government agency that oversees
Early Head Start. None of the information
will ever be connected with your name or
your child’s name. The information will
not be shared with your Early Head Start
program. The work is being conducted
by Mathematica Policy Research. All staff
members working on Baby FACES have lots
of experience doing research with young
children and their families, and have been
fully trained for this study.

Paperwork Reduction Act Statement: The described collection of information is voluntary. An agency may not conduct or
sponsor, and a person is not required to respond to, a collection of information unless it displays a currently valid OMB control
number. The OMB number for the described information collection is 0970-0354 and the expiration date is XX/XX/XXXX.
