Study of Nutrition and Activity in Child Care Settings II (SNACS-II)

Brief Description of Study for Provider Newsletter or Website

The (name of child care center/family child care home/child care program) is excited to announce that we will be part of a national study funded by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service. The study will look at the foods and activities provided to children in a sample of child care providers. We look forward to participating in this important study!

KEY FACTS ABOUT THE STUDY:

  • More than 1,300 child care providers from 25 States were selected to be part of the study.

  • The study will include many different types of child care providers including:

    • Child care centers,

    • Head Start centers,

    • Outside-school-hours care centers,

    • At-risk afterschool care centers, and

    • Family child care homes

  • The study will include over 4,000 infants, children, youth, and their parents/guardians.

  • Infants, children, youth, and their parents/guardians will be randomly selected to participate in the study.

  • Parents/guardians and youth will receive compensation for their time and participation.

  • Two independent research organizations - Mathematica and Westat – are conducting this study on behalf of USDA.

The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is collecting this information to understand the nutritional quality of CACFP meals and snacks, the cost to produce them, and dietary intakes and activity levels of CACFP participants. This is a voluntary collection and FNS will use the information to examine CACFP operations. The collection does request personally identifiable information under the Privacy Act of 1974. Responses will be kept private to the extent provided by law and FNS regulations. According to the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, an agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a person is not required to respond to, a collection of information unless it displays a valid OMB control number. The valid OMB control number for this information collection is 0584-xxxx. The time required to complete this information collection is estimated to average 0.0167 hours (1 minute) per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information. WHAT ARE THE STUDY ACTIVITIES?

If you are invited to participate as a parent/guardian of an INFANT (under age 1):

  1. You will be asked to provide your infant’s age and weight at the time of their last medical visit.

  2. With your written permission, child care center staff will provide information regarding what your infant eats/drinks at the child care center on one day.

If you are invited to participate as a parent/guardian of a CHILD (age 1 to 12 years):

  1. You will be asked to participate in two or three telephone interviews with questions about the food your child eats outside of child care and their physical activity.

  2. With your written permission, professional data collectors will observe the meals served and eaten by your child at the child care center.

  3. With your written permission, professional data collectors will take height and weight measurements of your child with assistance from center staff.

If you are invited to participate as the parent/guardian of a YOUTH (age 10 to 18 years):

  1. You will be asked to participate in a telephone interview with questions about your household.

  2. With your written permission, your child will be asked to complete a paper survey, which asks them questions about their meals and physical activity.
