with, and sponsored by, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) to better understand the characteristics and
use of trucks on our nation’s roads. The data will be used to create investments in our nation’s infrastructure,
vehicle technologies and parts; as well as, to evaluate truck safety needs, emissions estimates, and conservation
practices. The BTS is proud to be bringing back this survey after almost two decades to provide the needed timely
data for the nation.

Authority and Confidentiality
Title 13, United States Code, Sections 131 and 182, authorizes this collection. Sections 221, 224, and 225 require
your response. The U.S. Census Bureau is required by Section 9 of the same law to keep your information
confidential and use your responses only to produce statistics. The Census Bureau is not permitted to publicly
release your responses in a way that could identify you, your business, organization, or institution. Per the Federal
Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2015, your data are protected from cybersecurity risks through screening of the
systems that transmit your data.
Burden Estimate Statement
We estimate the Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey will take an average of 65 minutes to complete. Factors such as
the number, type(s), and activities of the sampled truck(s) will affect your actual time to complete the survey. This
estimate includes the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining
the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information.
