A Message from the Director, U.S. Census Bureau:
We request your participation with the 2022 Annual Survey of School System Finances. The U.S. Census
Bureau in conjunction with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is conducting this survey. This
survey is conducted in order to make available up-to-date school district finance data essential to the work of
the U.S. Congress, state legislators, government finance officers, education research organizations, and many
others. The purpose of this message is to officially announce the opening of the data collection for Fiscal Year
(FY) 2022.
Please provide the following information about your FY 2022 data submission via email:
1) Will your state be participating in the FY 2022 survey?
2) Estimated Date of Data Submission:
3) Will there be any changes from the prior year in your data submission format?
4) State Coordinator name, title, phone number, and email:
5) Are you a new coordinator?
6) Have you attended New Coordinator Training in the past?
7) Staff may contact your state with questions about your data. If you have delegated someone else to
be the primary contact for data inquiries, please provide this person’s name, title, phone number,
and e-mail address:

Burden Estimate Statement
We estimate the Annual Survey of School System Finances will take an average of 97 hours to complete if
responding using the codes on the survey form, or 18.25 hours if using state education agency codes. Factors
such as school system size, complexity, and activity will affect your actual time to complete the survey. This
estimate includes the time to review instructions, search existing data sources, gather and maintain the data
needed, and complete and review the survey.

survey. State financial reports, however, often do not contain details regarding school district
assets held in various nonretirement funds, such as general, debt service, and bond funds.
Please use the enclosed form as a worksheet prior to reporting online. Website and log-in
information can be found on the front page of the form. Online reporting is easy, reduces
costs, and decreases processing times. You may elect to return the completed form in the
enclosed envelope instead of responding online.
Information about the authority, confidentiality, and burden of this data collection can be
