Important Information About SOARS
Please Read Before Starting the Survey
The purpose of the study is to reduce the frequency of stillbirths and save future families from experiencing this devastating loss. Your answers will also be used to improve the care that families receive around the time of loss.
The Study of Associated Risks of Stillbirth (SOARS) is a research project sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Utah Department of Health.
We are asking all women in Utah who had a recent stillbirth to answer the same questions. Your name was identified from state Vital Records.
It takes about 25 minutes to answer all questions.
We understand that you may feel guilt, sadness or confusion when answering some questions and recalling your experience. Please know that often, there is no known reason that stillbirth happens. The information we are gathering will be used to better understand stillbirth for both parents and the health professionals who care for them.
If you don't want to participate in the survey, or if you don't want to answer a particular question, that's okay. There is no penalty or loss of benefits for not participating or answering all questions.
Your survey may be combined with information the health department has from other sources.
Your answers will be grouped with those from other women.
If you are currently in jail, your participation in the study will have no effect on parole.
The health department follows all state and federal privacy laws Your name is confidential and will not be on any reports from SOARS. The booklet has a number so we will know when it is returned.
If you have any questions about your rights in the project, please call Iona Thraen at 801-273-6643.
If you have questions about SOARS, or if you want to answer the questions by telephone, please call Barbara Algarin, Utah SOARS Project Coordinator, at
