About the Study
The United States Department of Agriculture’s
(USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) funds the
Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), which
provides support to child care and after school
providers to serve nutritious meals to over 4 million
children every day.
FNS is conducting the second Study of Nutrition
and Activity in Child Care Settings (SNACS-II). This
study will help FNS ensure that children receive
high quality child care and after school care through
the CACFP. Your participation in this study will help
provide important information on the following:
1. Nutritional quality of meals
2. Energy and nutrient intake
3. Food consumed and discarded
We hope that you agree to participate to support
improvements in the CACFP. Your participation
would involve the following:
1.	Observations of your child’s meals at their
child care center or family child care home
2. Measuring your child’s height and weight
3. An interview with you over the phone

You can help make a difference!

The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is collecting this information to understand the nutritional quality of CACFP meals
and snacks, the cost to produce them, and dietary intakes
and activity levels of CACFP participants. This is a voluntary
collection and FNS will use the information to examine
CACFP operations. The collection does request personally
identifiable information under the Privacy Act of 1974.
Responses will be kept private to the extent provided by law
and FNS regulations. According to the Paperwork Reduction
Act of 1995, an agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a

valid OMB control number for this information collection is
0584-xxxx. The time required to complete this information
collection is estimated to average 0.0501 hours (3 minutes)
per response, including the time for reviewing instructions,
searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining
the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information. Send comments regarding this burden
estimate or any other aspect of this collection of information,

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this study being done?

Will I be compensated for my time?

Good nutrition is key to proper childhood
development, but little is known about the food
children are eating or their opportunities for
physical activity while in child care. In recognition
of the importance of nutrition and physical activity
in child care, Congress directed USDA to conduct
a nationally representative study of child care
centers and family child care homes.

Yes. Please see our study website for more information
on compensation for your time.

Who is conducting the study?
Mathematica and Westat are conducting SNACS-II
for USDA. Their staff will be working with your child
care provider to coordinate study activities.

Why did you choose my
household?
Your household was randomly chosen using a
scientific method from an enrollment list at the
child care center your child attends. We want to
talk with you so that our findings represent all
households whose children attend child care
centers that participate in CACFP.

Do I have to do this study?
Parent, child, and youth participation is voluntary.
Being part of the study will not affect any USDA
benefits received by programs or families participating
in this data collection.

What study activities will my child
participate in?

Have a question?
Ready to join the study?

Depending on the age of your child (infant, child
or youth), they may participate in a variety of study
activities. Please visit our website for the details.

Can this impact my benefits or my
child’s status at the center?

Use passcode
[passcode] to access
the parent page

Being part of the study will not affect CACFP benefits
for programs or families.

Why is our participation important?

Help us learn about nutrition
in child care settings!

You and your household can help FNS to support
improvements in the CACFP program.

What kind of questions will you ask
in the parent phone interview?
We will ask about foods your child consumed outside
of child care or brought into child care from home; your
child’s activity levels and screen time; and participation
in food assistance programs.

What about my privacy?
Information gathered for SNACS-II is for research
purposes only and will be kept private to the full
extent allowed by law. Responses will be grouped
together. The names of child care providers,
children and family members will never appear
in any report or with any study findings.
