What are Sturgeon?

White Sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus)

Green Sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris)
• Sturgeon are long lived fish (100+ years) that evolved over 200
million years ago!
• Both White and Green Sturgeon can be found in the San Francisco
Bay and Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta year round.
• Threats to sturgeon in the SF Bay and Delta include:
o Predation by California sea lions
o Habitat degradation
o Poaching
o Dredging
o Ship strikes
• The magnitude of these threats on sturgeon populations is unclear,
which is why we are asking for your help.
• What can you do if you find a dead sturgeon?
-Do not disturb or move the carcass
-Take pictures
-Include your precise location
