SUBJECT:
Data collection support for the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG)
The HHS Office on Women’s Health (OWH) was established in 1991 to improve the health of
women and girls across the lifespan. OWH provides expert advice and consultation to the
Secretary on scientific, legal, ethical, and policy issues, and serves as a coordination point
throughout HHS on issues affecting the health of women and girls.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services uses the National Survey of Family Growth
(NSFG) to plan health services and health education programs, and conducts statistical studies of
families, fertility, and health. Data from the NSFG supports the mission of OWH by providing
quality data as evidence for coordination opportunities to advance policy through stakeholders,
educate women and girls in their communities, and develop innovative programs.
Data related to maternal and infant health outcomes is of particular interest to OWH. As a
federal partner, OWH supports data collection activities for the NSFG.
