Radiological Emergency Preparedness Tribal Focus Group
We are from the newly formed joint Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Tribal Working Group (FNTWG) and we are interested in getting your thoughts and insights on the topics of most interest or most significant for Tribal Nations who have equities in nuclear and radiation safety and security. In particular, we are seeking your feedback and input on radiological emergency preparedness and response (REP) topics that would be of most interest to Tribal Nations with equities related to commercial nuclear power facilities.
We will use the feedback in the ongoing forum to coordinate emergency preparedness and response activities that provide effective coordination and communication with the 33 federally recognized Tribal Nations located within a 50-mile radius of a commercial nuclear power facility. The purpose of the meeting is to establish an on-going dialogue and coordination with this group in the area of nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response.
Awareness and Understanding
How familiar are you with FEMA’s REP Program and NRC?
What concerns do you or your Tribal community members have about radiological hazards?
What do you think are the most significant challenges your Tribal Nation would face in a radiological emergency?
Community Preparedness and Emergency Communication
How does your Tribal Nation currently communicate emergency information to the community, and how might this work in the case of a radiological event?
How can the FEMA REP Program and NRC help Tribal communities to be better prepared for radiological emergencies?
What does an inclusive approach to emergency preparedness look like to your Tribal Nation?
Lessons Learned
Has your Tribal community worked with FEMA’s REP Program and NRC? What were some areas that these agencies can improve when working with Tribal Nations? If not, how can each agency bridge the gap and support Tribal Nations?
Exploring Preferred Communication and Engagement
How does your community prefer to receive information and updates from FEMA or the NRC and how often? (e.g., regular meetings, written updates, community workshops)
