June Area Survey – June 1, 2023

This non-substantive change request affects the 2023 June Area Survey.

NOTE: The 2021 June Area Screening form was not used in 2021 or 2022 because of cognitive testing done after the change request was submitted. The traditional screener was used, but slightly modified to collect the data by phone. NASS will continue to use the modified screener and collect most data by phone. Other specific changes are itemized below:

June Area Frame Screening Form - Version A

• Removal of question 3 – “Was any of this land (inside these blue lines) operated by someone else?” Since screening is no longer done in person for most segments.

June Area Frame Screening Form - Version B

• Removal of question 3 – “Was any of this land (inside these blue lines) operated by someone else?” Since screening is no longer done in person for most segments.

June Area Frame Screening Form - Version C

• Removal of question 3 – “Was any of this land (inside these blue lines) operated by someone else?” Since screening is no longer done in person for most segments.

June Area Survey US Master Version - Same as 2022 version with the following changes:

• Section A – Removed questions added in 2022 for 2022 Agricultural Coverage Evaluation Survey - Questions 4 and 5 from the 2022 June Area Survey,

• Section D – Drop sugarcane from US Master version. Sugarcane applies to only one state,

• Section F – Drop High Moisture Corn Stocks to match change made for Agricultural Survey – June 1, 2022 - Question 4d,

• Section K (Kentucky Version only) – Drop Question 4 (how the operator considers the operation). It was included for 2022 for a cooperator funded equine survey.

• Section N – remove the “Census” points recording sheet that was added in 2022 June Area Survey to collect point data for 2022 Census of Agriculture/2022 Agricultural Coverage Evaluation Survey.

• Section O – Reinstated Section O - Technology Use last used in 2021. The section is asked in every odd year and data are used to produce the Farm Computer Usage and Ownership report at https://usda.library.cornell.edu/concern/publications/h128nd689. The report presents data on farm computer usage, including computer access, ownership or leasing, farm business use, and internet access.

These changes will not impact the current sample size or respondent burden.

The revised screeners and questionnaires are loaded to ROCIS.
