Background Information
NOAA Ocean Exploration typically supports 3-4 ROV expeditions per year on NOAA Ship Okeanos
Explorer and brings on two members of the scientific community per expedition to serve as the
onboard Science Leads (typically one geology lead and one biology lead). Science Leads are
chosen for a combination of their science background, communication skills and interest
in/appreciation of public outreach, and past history of collaborative community engagement.
Science Leads are responsible for providing critical scientific guidance on the characterization of
biological and geological discoveries that result from NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer
expeditions. During ROV dives, Science Leads liaise with the shoreside community to narrate the
live feed and determine which samples should be collected. Once samples are brought to the
onboard lab, they direct sample processing to include determining preservatives, photographing,
labeling, and packaging samples.
Science Leads are also responsible for generating content and reviewing materials for the
expedition product suite (e.g. ROV dive plans, ROV dive summaries, information for image and
video captions, expedition report, content for the expedition website, etc.). Science Leads
participate in cruise planning conference calls, at sea science activities and meetings, and postcruise assessments. They participate in media activities and serve as the science representatives
during ship-to-shore events for VIP, education, outreach, or other partners.
Science Leads are expected to demonstrate creativity and initiative in solving operational
problems, as well as directing interdisciplinary teams of scientists and technicians located both
on board the ship and on shore. A high degree of professionalism is expected, and participation in
telepresence-based outreach and education activities is required. Individuals must be able to
communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and possess strong interpersonal skills to
enable working as part of science, operations, education, and outreach teams.
