Sheet 3: Purpose

Purpose: This spreadsheet is intended as a tool to facilitate the capturing of performance measures from multiple project subactivities. This tracker does not replace formal Performance Progress Reports or the need to submit those in a timely manner through Grants Online. Grantees may find this tracker to be helpful for populating the performance measure table of their PPR. The table below provides a description of common performance measures but please note that only a subset may be relevant for your project.
How to use this spreadsheet: Enter relevant information into the "PPR tracker template" tab. At the end of the reporting period, you can view the total for the reporting period in the "PPR Performance Measure Summary" tab and use that number to populate your PPR template.
This information collection is under OMB Control No. 0648-0718 which expires on _________. The information collection may be used by NOAA to publicly communicate about the accomplishments of the project.

Metric Description Best Practice Example (if applicable)
Pounds Removed (reporting period) Weight of debris removed in pounds during the reporting period.
Grantees record the weight of the debris removed during disposal (i.e. weight of dumpster).
Wet weight or dry weight is acceptable. Best practice is to make a note of wet weight if that method is used.

If providing an estimated weight, tell us that the weight is an estimate and describe how it was calculated. If it is actual, confirm that it is actual.

Pounds Removed (cumulative) Weight of debris removed in pounds from the beginning of the project through the end of the reporting period.
.
Wet weight or dry weight is acceptable. Best practice is to make a note of wet weight if that method is used.

If providing an estimated weight, tell us that it is an estimate and how it was calculated. If it is actual, confirm that it is actual.

Weight of debris reused/recycled/converted to energy (pounds) (cumulative) Weight of debris in pounds not sent to landfill Dictate in the PPR performance measure notes box which non-landfill disposal method was used (e.g., recycle) 80 pounds recycled, 350 pounds reused (returned to owners)
Footprint of Debris Removed (square feet) (cumulative) This is only relevant for ADV, DFG, and tire removal projects. Calculate/estimate the area that was cleared of debris. It is acceptable to multiple the size of an item (e.g., trap/tire) by the number of items removed Example: 150 traps were removed that were 3 feet by 3 feet.
150*9 square feet gives a total of 1,350 square feet
Geographic Area Surveyed (square miles or shoreline miles) (cumulative) ADV: Some projects require surveys to determine or confirm the location of ADVs. Grantees would record the square miles or linear shoreline miles where these surveys are conducted.
DFG: Sonar surveys may be used to detect DFG, or alternatively there may be grappling surveys completed by grantees to recover DFG. Both would record the square miles of surveys that were completed.

Number of Vessels Removed (cumulative) The number of Abandoned or Derelict Vessels removed

Number of Traps Removed (cumulative)
Use your best judgment when estimating partial traps.
Number of Nets Removed (cumulative)
Rope/lines can be included here as well. Use your best judgment to quantify whether every piece counts as one.
Number of Volunteers (cumulative) Record the number of volunteers during the reporting period People who have volunteered more than once during the reporting period can be counted for each time they volunteer as long as it is a separate event/activity
Volunteer Hours (cumulative) Record the number of hours that volunteers contributed during the reporting period The accuracy of this metric is particularly important for grantees that use volunteer time as matching funds.

If volunteer hours are not used as a match and you are providing an estimated number of volunteer hours, tell us that it is an estimate and describe how the total was calculated.

Number of P-12 students served - FORMAL education / outreach
(cumulative)
This basically is any outreach to a school, university, adult education, or other formal program that has a structured education system with a connection to the curriculum of the school or state. Wherever possible, the numbers we report should only include the people with whom we had a meaningful interaction. This is an interaction with MDP staff or grantees, counting only the number of people you directly interact with during an outreach or educational program. In-person and virtual classes, lab courses, workshops, seminars, field trips, internships, classroom presentations, synchronous or asynchronous online learning events.
Number of post-secondary / adult students served- FORMAL education / outreach (cumulative) This basically is any outreach to a school, university, adult education, or other formal program that has a structured education system with a connection to the curriculum of the school or state..
Number of youth and adults served through informal education/outreach (cumulative) This would include events and learning that we or our funded partners give outside the established formal education system. Participants engage in these activities with the aim of enhancing their own knowledge, skills, and competencies outside of a formal curriculum. Wherever possible, the numbers we report should only include the people with whom we had a meaningful interaction. This is an interaction with MDP staff or grantees, counting only the number of people you directly interact with during an outreach or educational program. Public presentations, tabling events, festivals, youth programs, citizen programs, field programs, and family programs
