PURPOSE:

This electronic application will be used to collect applicant information for the purposes of selecting scholars to participate in the program on an annual basis. This application will help to modernize the application process and provide streamlining both for applicants and program staff/reviewers by reducing application requirements and providing one hub for data about each applicant.
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONDENTS:

The target group for this collection is high school students in their Senior year, or college students in their Freshmen or Sophomore years.

Application Description:
Explain who you expect will apply and this group’s connection to the Federal program / service. Generally describe the information collection activity – e.g. are you collecting resumes, letters of recommendation, transcripts? What will respondents be asked?
Respondents will be students interested in attending an 1890 institution and pursuing a career relevant to employment at USDA.
Section 1: Biographical Information requires the applicant to include biographical information such as their name, address, age, etc.
Section 2: Education, requires educational background information such as grade point average, name of the academic institution they are currently attending and declared major, transcripts, the names of the academic institutions to which they are applying or have been accepted, what course of study they are pursuing, etc.
Section 3: SAT/ACT Scores requests the applicant to upload any relevant test scores.
Section 4: Work experience, Extracurricular Activities, and Volunteering Opportunities provides the opportunity for an applicant to list any paid or unpaid work experience in the prior 4 years.
Section 5: Essays, invites the applicant to complete two (2) essays of 250-500 words with the following prompts:
How will the USDA 1890 National Scholarship support your career aspirations? If there is a particular mission area within USDA that also supports your career aspirations, please indicate that mission area.
What factors have influenced your decision to pursue academic studies in agriculture, food, natural resource sciences, or a related discipline?
Section 6: Agency Preferences is an optional section in which the applicant may indicate a preference for up to three (3) USDA agency placements, and three (3) areas of career interest.
Section 7: Professional or Academic Reference(s) requires the names, titles/positions, phone numbers, and email addresses of three (3) references that may be contacted when reviewing the application.
Section 8: Application Review and Certification requires that the applicant to certify that they have reviewed their application, that all the information is correct to the best of their knowledge, and that they have read and agree to the scholar agreement and continuing service agreement.
Section 9: Demographic Questions, requests that applicants provide optional demographic information for the purposes of program improvement.
