What is the National
Longitudinal Survey
of Youth 2027
(NLSY27)?

Will I receive anything for my time?
Yes! You will receive $50 after you
complete an interview.

How much time does it take to
participate?
The survey will take about 1-1.5 hours.

The NLSY27 is a survey that will collect
information over time about how young
people’s experiences at home, school,
and work shape their lives. Results from
the NLSY27 will be used to help guide
planning of education, job training, and
work opportunities in the U.S. for today’s
generation of youth!

How can I take part in the survey?
If you are eligible, you will need to
review information about the survey and
then agree to participate. Your parent
or guardian will also need to give their
permission. Then, an interviewer will read
the survey questions to you and enter your
answers into a tablet. For some parts of the
survey, you will wear earphones and hear
the questions read by the computer and
enter your answers yourself. Your parent
or guardian will be in your home while you
complete the survey.

Do I have to participate in this
survey?
No, taking part is voluntary.
And if you decide to participate in this
year’s survey, you will still be able to decide
whether you want to participate in the
NLSY27 follow-up surveys in future years.

What types of questions will I be
asked?
Questions will be about school, jobs,
health, family, and your social life.

Why am I being asked to
participate?
You were chosen to represent youth in your
age group. Your responses to the survey
will represent other youth your age across
the country.

How often will I be asked to take
part in the NLSY27?
The NLSY27 is a longitudinal survey that
will interview the same group of youth over
time. Youth who participate will represent
their generation as they move from school
to work and into adulthood. Right now,
we are planning to give you the chance to
participate every 1-2 years. You will receive
cash or a gift card each time you complete
a survey!

Will my parent or caregiver take
part in the NLSY27?
Maybe. Some parents or caregivers of
youth who take part in the survey will be
asked to participate. If they do, they will
likely only do a survey one time.
