Abstract: THIS SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED TO COLLECT PUBLIC ROADWAY DATA FROM THE STATES THAT IDENTIFIED THE TOTAL PUBLIC ROAD MILEAGE IN THE UNITED STATES AND THE GOVERNMENTAL UNIT RESPONSIBLE FOR ITS CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE. TOTAL PUBLIC ROAD MILEAGE WAS ALSO USED AS A BASIS FOR APPORTIONING FEDERAL-AID FUNDS FOR CERTAIN HIGHWAY AND SAFETY PROGRAMS.
