Abstract: THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY IS TO HELP IDENTIFY THE CONDITIONS THAT LEAD TO HABITUAL CIGARETTE SMOKING AND THOSE THAT LEAD TO CONTINUED NON-SMOKING AMONG ADOLESCENTS. THE STUDY DESIGN FOCUSES ON ADOLESCENT AGE GROUPS WHERE THE TRANSITION FROM OCCASIONAL (EXPERIMENTAL) SMOKING IS MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR. THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY WILL BE USEFUL FOR DEVELOPING PROGRAMS TO REDUCE THE INCIDENCE OF SMOKING AMONG ADOLESCENTS
