Abstract: SECTION 516 OF P.L. 95-87 PROVIDES THAT PERMITTERS CONDUCTING SURFACE COAL MINING OPERATIONS WITH UNDERGROUND MINE ACTIVITIES SHALL MEET APPLICABLE PERFORMANCE STANDARDS OF THE ACT. THIS INFORMATION IN USED BY THE REGULATORY AUTHORITY IN MONITORING AND INSPECTING UNDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE CONDUCTED IN A MANNER WHICH PRESERVES AND ENHANCES ENVIRONMENTAL AND OTHER VALUES OF THE ACT.
