Abstract: LETTER 890(DO) IS USED TO NOTIFY A TAXPAYER THAT THEY ARE TO CALL AN IRS OFFICE FOR AN APPOINTMENT FOR AN EXAMINATION OF A RETURN. THIS LETTER INFORMS THEM OF THE NEED TO PROVIDE VERIFYING RECORDS USED AS A BASIS FOR THE ITEM CHECKED OFF AT THE END OF THE LETTER. THE IRS USES THIS INFORMATION TO RECOMMEND AN INCREASE, DECREASE OR NO CHANGE TO THEIR TAX LIABILITY FOR A GIVEN YEAR.
