FIRE DOORS AT LEVEL LANDINGS ARE NEEDED TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF SMOKE AND TOXIC GASES IN THE EVENT OF AN UNDERGROUND MINE FIRE. THEY AFFORD AL PROTECTION OF A SAFE REFUGE FOR THE MINERS WHILE AWAITING A SHAFT CONVEYANCE TO ESCAPE THE MINE. VENTILATION CHANGES WHICH MAY OCCUR AS A MINE IS DEVELOPED MAY NECESSITATE THE RELOCATION OF SOME DOORS.
