approved, with the addition of the follow-up calls for one quarter
in the rural south sample, as agreed by HNIS. However, it is
approved only for the purpose of evaluating the method, and the
data which are collected incident to that evaluation may not be
used for any substantive purpose. Furthermore, any future
substantive data collection submitted by HNIS must demonstrate that
the agency has completed its analysis on the: (1) advantages and
disadvantages of conducting individual intake surveys apart from
the NFCS, (2) advantages of alternative intervals for the National
Food Consumption Survey, including one, two, and five year
intervals, (3) alternative levels of detail on the foods consumed,
including at least three levels of aggregation, and (4) alternative
survey methods including at least a modified NFCS approach and
integration with the Continuing Expenditure Survey sponsored by the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, as directed in the budget
analysis.
