Abstract: OVER A QUARTER MILLION USERS VISIT THE AMERICAN FLATS AREA ANNUALLY. THEIR PARTICIPATION IN A WIDE DIVERSITY OF RECREATION, BOTH MOTORIZED AND PRIMITIVE--COUPLED WITH THE AREA'S SPECTACULAR RESOURCES, REQUIRES AN INFORMED MANAGEMENT RESPONSE. BLM MUST DETERMINE ACTUAL RECREATION PREFERENCES OF EACH MAJOR USER TYPE TO PROPERLY MANAGE.
