Terms of Clearance: THIS CLEARANCE REQUEST IS NOT APPROVED UNDER THE PROVISIONS AT 5 CFR 1320.4[b][3]. CDC HAS STATED THAT IF A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WORKER SAFETY AND THE PERFORMANCE OF SAFETY TASKS BY OHNS CAN BE DEMONSTRATED THEN MORE NURSES COULD BE TRAINED TO ADD SAFETY TASKS TO THEIR ROUTINES WHICH COULD LEAD TO A MARKED REDUCTION IN WORKPLACE INJURIES. WE DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THIS STUDY, AS PRESENTLY DESIGNED, CAN PROVIDE EVIDENCE THAT SUCH A RELATIONSHIP EXISTS. FIRST, THE ABSENCE OF DATA ON WORKER INJURY AT SITES WITHOUT OHNS SERIOUSLY UNDERMINES THE CREDIBILITY OF THE STUDY. SECOND, THE QUESTIONAIRE IS DIRECTED TO THE OHN RATHER THAN AN OBJECTIVE, THIRD PARTY OBSERVER. WITHOUT ADEQUATE CONTROLS ON THESE AND OTHER VARIABLES, THIS SURVEY WILL NOT PRODUCE DATA ON WHICH PUBLIC POLICY COULD BE BASED.

Abstract: BECAUSE INJURIES AND THEIR SEQUELAE ARE A MAJOR PROBLEM AND A VERY LAR COST TO INDUSTRY, THIS PROJECT WAS DEVELOPED TO IDENTIFY THOSE SAFETY RELATED TASKS PERFORMED BY OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSES WHICH APPEAR TO HAVE THE GREATEST IMPACT ON DECREASING THE NUMBER AND SEVERITY OF INJURIES AND INJURY COSTS.
