Abstract: THESE DATA, WHICH ARE COLLECTED FROM A SAMPLE CONSISTING OF 640 COMMERCIAL BANKS AND MUTUAL SAVINGS BANK, ARE USED BY THE FEDERAL RESERVE (1) TO ANALYZE AND INTERPRET MOVEMENTS IN THE MONETARY AGGRGATES, (2) TO OBSERVE COMPETITIVE DEVELOPMENTS BETWEEN BANKS AND THRIFT INSTITITIONS, AND (3) TO HELP MONITOR THE EARNINGS POSITION OF BANKS AND THRIFTS.
