approved on the condition that EPA submits a letter to the OMB Desk
Officer for Water by January 31, 1985 which thoroughly explains
what EPA will do with the information it acquires. Will the
information be used as a basis for altering the existing Primary
Drinking Water Standards? EPA should also explain what steps it
will undertake to avoid biasing the sample of water supply systems
that wil be studied. . In addition, please ssend a copy of the
Drinking Water Research Plan f 1982-1986.

EPA WILL COLLECT DATA ONCE ON COSTS
AND CHARACTERISTICS OF WATE SUPPLY SYSTEMS, INCLUDING SYSTEMS WITH
RECORDS OF COMPLIANCE AND NONCOMPLIANC WITH MAXIMUM CONTAINMENT
LEVELS UNDER THE SAFE DRINKING WATER ACT. THE AGENCY WILL USE THE
DATA TO COMPARE COSTS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THESE SYSTEMS AND
ASSESS THE COST OF COMPLYING WITH THE REGULATIONS.
