Terms of Clearance: Under the Paperwork Reduction Act, OMB does not approve this survey fo use by the Human Nutrition Information Service. This survey does not meet the criteria required for approval under the Act. The Service ha not adequately demonstrated that the data to be obtained from the proposed collection of information will have practical utility for future federal nutrition and consumption research efforts, nor whether the proposed methodology can be feasibly implemented in such research efforts. The Service sould clearly demonstrate whether two-dimensional food models can be used feasibly in the 1987 National Food Consumption Survey. Furthermore, the HNIS should provide plans for correcting the 1987 NFCS data for comparison with past NFCS's, the NHANES study series, and other food consumption surveys which do not rely on two-dimensional models.

Abstract: NUTRITIONISTS AND HEALTH AND FOOD SAFETY PROFESSIONALS REQUEST MORE ACCURATE MEASURES OF FOOD AND NUTRIENT INTAKES. IN THIS METHODOLOGY STUDY, 100 INDIVIDUALS WILL TEST AN IMPROVED PROCEDURE FOR ESTIMATING FOOD PORTION SIZES BY USING BOTH THE NEW PROCEDURE AND THE PROCEDURE USED IN THE NFCS. RESULTS WILL SHOW THE USEFULNESS OF THE NEW PROCEDU IN FUTURE FOOD AND NUTRITION SURVEYS.
