Abstract: EFFECTIVE PROGRAMS TO PREVENT PREMATURE DEATH AND TO FINANCE AND PROVI CARE FOR THE SERIOUSLY ILL REQUIRE COMPREHENSIVE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DECEDENTS IN THE U.S. THE MAIN SURVEY WILL SECURE SUCH INFORMATION FROM THE NEXT OF KIN OF A NATIONAL SAMPLE OF DECEDENT IN 1986. THE QUESTIONNAIRE AND PROCEDURES WILL BE EVALUATED IN THE PRETEST.
