THE MARIN MAMMAL PROTECTION ACT OF
1972 EXEMPTED THE KILLING, GENERALLY WITHOUT RESTRICTION, OF POLAR
BEAR, WALRUS, AND SEA OTTER TO NATIVES WHO DWELL ALONG THE COAST OF
ALASKA. MANDATORY SEALING AND REPORTING REQUIREMEN WILL PROVIDE
INFORMATION ON THE KILL AND THE HEALTH OF THE POPULATION THAT WILL
ALLOW THE SERVICE TO MAKE DECISIONS ON MANAGEMENT OF SUCH
SPECIES.
