Terms of Clearance: THIS INFORMATION COLLECTION REEUEST IS DISAPPROVED FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: 1) THERE IS A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF DUPLICATION WITH THE 1988 NATIONAL MATERNAL AND INFANT HEALTH SURVEY (NMIHS), 2) THE MISSOURI STUDY MIGHT BE MORE APPROPRIATE AS A SUPPLEMENT TO NMIHS, 3) SOME THOUGHT SHOULD B GIVEN TO WHY THE QUESTIONS DIFFER IN AREAS WHERE THE GOALS OF CERTAIN QUESTIONS ARE IDENTICAL, 4) IT IS NOT CLEAR THAT MISSOURI IS COMPARABL TO THE NATION IN AREAS OTHER THAN BIRTH OUTCOMES E.G., MINORITIES OTHER THAN BLACKS, ECONOMICS, AND AVAILABLE TYPES OF HEALTH CARE. 5) CERTAIN TYPES OF QUESTIONS WERE NOT INCLUDED IN THE MISSOURI SURVEY THAT PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED E.G., TYPES OF DELIVERIES AND QUESTIONS ON HIV INFECTION, AND 6) OTHER QUESTIONS ARE UNCLEAR OR MAY LACK UTILITY, SPECIFICALLY, 8c ON THE PRENATAL CARE FORM AND F8,G17,H8 ON THE MOTHER'S QUESTIONNAIRE.

Abstract: MORE ACCURATE INFORMATION IS NEEDED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHY WOME WOMEN DELIVER VERY LOW BIRTHWEIGH INFANTS OR SUFFER FETAL DEATHS. THIS SURVEY WILL COLLECT POPULATION BASED DATA WHICH CAN BE USED TO EXAMINE THIS MAJOR PUBLIC HEALTH PROBL IN ORDER TO DESIGN FUTURE INTERVENTION STRATEGIES TO REDUCE INFANT MORTALITY.
